Having your pet undergo surgery is stressful for both you and your pet. Your pet may be anxious or in pain, and it will not understand what is going on. That’s why it’s important to prepare your pet, and yourself, for the surgical process. At Boyd Lake Veterinary Center, our team provides your pet with highest quality care in a safe, calm environment. We are located in Loveland, CO. If your pet needs surgery, our team will provide you with specific instructions for the pre- and post-operative care so that your pet can heal quickly. Here are some general suggestions for caring for your pet.
During an examination, our veterinarians will diagnose any health problems in your pet and discuss with you all options for treatment. If your pet requires surgery, we will talk about each step of the process so that you understand what will happen. During this visit, your pet will also have pre-op bloodwork done to ensure that it can safely undergo anesthesia.
Prior to Surgery
Your pet typically should not have any food 12 hours prior to a surgical procedure. Most surgeries are scheduled early in the morning so that your pet can eat in the evening. Some water is okay prior to surgery, but should be limited.
When your pet comes out of surgery, it will be kept under observation for a few hours by our staff. This is to ensure that the anesthesia wears off and there are no issues. For spay or neuter surgeries, your pet will be ready to come home soon after the procedure. For more intensive surgeries, your pet may be kept overnight to be observed for any complications.
Your pet will be sent home with instructions for care following surgery. In some cases, your pet will need pain medication. Often, the biggest challenge for pet owners is keeping their pet calm and resting. Allowing your pet to play too soon can result in stitches being pulled and cause additional issues. Cones and similar medical equipment can be used to prevent your pet from licking or tugging at sutures. This can help your pet heal faster and prevent the risk of infection.
